Autodesk Inventor Tips & Tricks |
|
| Edit Imported Files with Autodesk Fusion |
| By David Melvin, PE, TEDCF Publishing |
You've imported a file into Autodesk Inventor 2012, and now you need to modify some of the features. The best and fastest way to do this is to edit it using Fusion. This short tip will show you the basics of how Autodesk Inventor 2012 and Autodesk Fusion 2012 work together to simplify the editing process. |
Import a File Into Inventor |
| You can import any translated format like SAT, STEP, IGES, etc using the File Open command. Set the File Type window to the file format and open the file. |
| |
 |
| |
In this example I've opened an IGES file named Bearing Housing. |
| Confirm That the Files Imported Successfully |
| When you successfully import a file Inventor automatically converts it to a solid body. When this happens the color of the model is the default model color, which is the gray color you see above. If it's the translucent orange surface color you may need to use a different format or repair and stitch surfaces to create a solid body. |
| |

|
| |
Open a Fusion Session |
| Expand the file in the browser and then double click the Solid Body Base. You'll receive a prompt explaining that you are about to open Fusion so that you can edit the body. Click OK. |
| |
 |
| |
Edit the File Using Fusion |
| You can easily modify any surface on the part including moving holes and changing their size. When you're finished, click the Return button. |
|
| |
| Add New Features Using Inventor |
| Fusion creates and modifies solid bodies while Inventor creates parametric models containing editable features. When you add new features using Inventor you can edit them directly from Inventor. |
| |
 |
| |
| When you return to Autodesk Inventor from Fusion the file is ready for you to add new features, create drawings, and add to assemblies and presentations. |
| |
Why is This Important? |
People all over the world work together to create new products, but they don't all use Autodesk Inventor. So we have to import translated versions when they don't. Using Fusion to edit their solid bodies saves a great deal of time and simplifies the process. |
