| Autodesk Inventor 2012 Marking Menu Accelerates Navigation |
| By David Melvin, PE, TEDCF Publishing |
The new Marking Menu in Autodesk Inventor 2012 significantly speeds up navigation, so this tip is a must see.
It will help if you practice with Inventor while you read through the tip.
Start by opening a new part file. |
 |
| |
Open the Marking Menu |
| Now right click in the graphics area. |
 |
This opens the Marking Menu, which is the 8 buttons surrounding your pointer. The standard Context Menu is below it. |
| |
The Current Mode is Menu Mode |
The Marking Menu has two modes, and currently it's in Menu Mode. In this mode you select a button to evoke a command.
The second mode is much faster, but in order to use it you need to know where the commands are located. |
 |
For example the Line command is directly above your pointer when you right click to open the menu. Now that you know this, click in the center of the Marking Menu to close it. |
|
| |
Use Mouse Gestures |
Now we're going to use the second Marking Menu mode, which is Mark Mode. It's also known as Gesture Behavior or Mouse Gestures. Since the Line command is vertically above your pointer when you open the Marking Menu, right drag your mouse vertically upward to evoke the command. To do this, click and hold your right mouse button down while you move your pointer vertically upward. |
 |
You'll have to practice this a few times to get the right length required to evoke the command, but as you can see, this opens the Line command. |
| |
The Marking Menu is Environment-Driven |
You'll see different commands when you're in a different environment. |
 |
This is the Marking Menu in the Part environment. You can see this menu if you Finish the Sketch, and then right click in the graphics area. |
| |
So how do you use it? |
The best way to take advantage of this new feature is to learn the locations of all the commands in all the environments. This gives you the power to make Mouse Gestures to quickly evoke commands. |
| |
What else can you do? |
One of the best ways to learn the locations of the commands is to customize the menus. Read my Tips and Tricks on Customizing the Marking Menu to learn how to do this. |
